How to Deep Clean Your Carpets at Home

Carpets are wonderful additions to modern homes, and really liven up any space they are placed in by bringing a new level of color and texture to the room. There are many breathtaking designs available for sale, and carpets are becoming an essential part of a warm and welcoming home.

Carpets, require care if they are to look as clean and beautiful as they did on the day you first bought them. If fact, shocking statistics from a study conducted by Philip Tierno Jr., Ph.D. revealed that your average household carpet can be as much as 4000 times dirtier than your toilet seat.

Why does a carpet need to be deep cleaned?

Carpets can tell many stories. It can tell you where you’ve been, and who’s been in to see you. It can tell you who’s messy, clumsy or accident prone in your home. It can also be the fuzzy home to mites, fleas, bugs, bacteria, and viruses. In fact, scientists have revealed that vacuuming a carpet happens to be one of five most germ-infested activities that can be done around the house. That doesn’t sound so appealing, does it?

Sadly, British statistics show us that a staggering 90% of carpets have never been deep cleaned. This is a bad choice on the part of a homeowner for a number of reasons. Not deep cleaning your carpet may mean that it holds layers of dirt and sand that can ultimately destroy your carpet fibers. Stains and dust on carpets may actually make a room look neglected, and to add insult to injury, as carpets absorb liquids and food stains, they might give out unpleasant odors as well.

How often does a carpet need to be deep cleaned?

All carpets are different, and they usually come in various colors, shapes, and sizes. There are certain factors that should help you determine how often you clean your carpet. For instance, if you have young children or four legged pets, accidents are prone to happen. Also, if your carpet is placed in an area people frequently walk over, a more regular deep cleaning is called for. Color plays a role as well, because the lighter your carpet is, the more cleaning it needs. It is generally recommended that you deep clean your carpets at least once every 6-8 months.

Can this be done at home?

Yes. Professional cleaners can be expensive, so with the right equipment, you will be able to achieve similar results at an affordable price. A big plus is that when carpet shampooing is cheaper, you can do it more often! Here are a few helpful tips to remember:

  • It is important to start early in the day as you need to gather your equipment before stores close, do the cleaning, and then wait for it to dry. Letting your carpet dry while the sun is out speeds up the process.
  • Choose a day that is not humid. This means that your carpet will dry faster, and thus not be susceptible to mold and mildew growth.
  • Check to see if your carpet is colorfast. Carpets react to cleaning liquids in different ways, and you don’t want to be surprised with blotchy carpets after the cleaning.
  • Deactivate any alarms before you begin the cleaning process.

A few simple steps…

  1. Make sure any furniture is out of the way, and your walls are properly covered.

  1. Next, vacuum the area well. This will prevent dirt and dust to go deeper into the fibers of the carpet.

  1. Try to first work on the visible spots or stains and blot them out (you can pre-treat them with store-bought solutions, but there are also cleaning liquids that can be made using water, vinegar, and baking soda that do the job just as well).

  1. Make sure you rent a steam machine. You can also buy one for yourself if you think you need to deep clean your carpets regularly (i.e if you have light colored carpets or young kids), but these models may not be as powerful as the rentals. A dry extraction method can also be used, but this is usually a more expensive route to take, and it requires the use of many chemicals that may not be good for you and your family in the long run. The manufacturer’s instructions are pretty clear, so any carpet cleaning machine can be easily used by non-professionals.

  1. You can begin steam cleaning or hot water extraction (the method also depends on the type of carpet). This means that pressurized water/steam and cleaning compounds will travel deep into the carpet, cleaning its fibers, and then be sucked out along with the dirt, dust, and debris, making your carpet as good as new.

  1. Give it plenty of time to dry, and don’t use the carpet or replace the furniture before you give it time to do so. Soon you will have a beautiful, clean carpet!
